Tractor Competition

Université Laval Breaks Three-Year Quarter Scale Competition Winning
Streak
If you want to succeed, it pays to plan
ahead. Just ask the students from Quebec's Université Laval who competed
recently in the 2002 Quarter Scale Tractor International Student Design
Competition. After finishing squarely in the middle of the pack in past
competitions, they got to work the day after last year's contest ended on their
2002 tractor. Their farsightedness propelled them past 29 other teams from the
US, Canada and Malaysia and earned them overall top honors and the Wehner-Detra
Traveling Trophy for 2002.
Rounding out the top five finishers in the
contest, held May 31 - June 2 in East Moline, IL, were Kansas State University
(2nd place), University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University (3rd place
tie) and the University of Illinois (5th place).
Université Laval placed first in two of
five scoring categories: the performance competition (tractor pull) and static
design judging, for which the machines are evaluated on overall design,
manufacturability, serviceability and safety. Three other elements comprise the
rest of the scores: a written design report, an oral team presentation and
tractor maneuverability. Taking the trophy for top written design report was
Michigan State University, while The Ohio State University placed first in the
team presentation and maneuverability.
Other individual awards went to the University of
Kentucky (Sportsmanship), the University of Putra-Malaysia (Teamwork) and
Kansas State University (Campbell Scientific trophy for best use of data
acquisition). Also, the University of Illinois team's orange-and-blue
"Chief's Revenge" was chosen as the machine with the Best Appearance,
while newcomer University of Arizona was voted Rookie of the Year.
The Quarter-Scale Tractor International Student
Design Competition is sponsored by AGCO Corp., Briggs & Stratton, Case IH,
Caterpillar, Cub Cadet, Deere & Co and New Holland North America.
Additional support is provided by Bridgestone/Firestone, Campbell Scientific,
Digi-Star, The Grasshopper Company, Milwaukee Electric Tool Corp, MATCOR, Inc,
Midwest Super Cub and Snap-On.
2nd Annual Quarter Scale Web Design Competition a Great Success
For the second year, 2002 Quarter Scale teams
had the opportunity to showcase their Web design talents while promoting their
team, the Competition and ASABE. And the competition was stiff with nine
entrants from the U.S., Canada and Malaysia.
Participants were given a set of basic guidelines
to follow and the rest was up to them. As always, the designs were innovative
and cleaver. ASABE President, Wayne Skaggs of North Carolina State University;
Marilyn Dumolien of Deere & Company; and John Hood of ASABE had their work
cut out for them as they judged the Competition which took place a few weeks
prior to the actual Quarter Scale competition held in East Moline.
We are pleased to announce that The University of
Wisconsin - Madison finished on top with the University of Putra - Malaysia
taking second and the University of Tennessee placing third. Congratulations to
all the winners and thanks to everyone who entered.
