Last Word (reader opinion) ­ New Particulate Matter Rules are Unnecessary
On November 29, 1996, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed revisions to the primary and secondary National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for particulate matter (PM). The proposal is under review by the EPA and a final decision on implementation will be made in June. The EPA must not impose the new standards until conclusive scientific evidence exists that fine particulates are a health problem.
