Engineering & Technology for a
Sustainable World
MARCH 1999 - VOL. 6 NO. 3
Features
Finding the Needle in the Haystack
Alternative pest control strategies are being created and evaluated in response
to a shrinking pest management arsenal. USDA researchers believe that parasitic
wasps could be the answer for the grain industry.
Expanding Crop Choices
A team at North Dakota State University (NDSU) developed a computer program
that designs and optimizes drip irrigation systems for alternative crops. It
includes an economic analysis and has been field tested with a rotation of
carrots, cabbage, onions and corn.
Renewable Resources 2020
Concern over increasing oil imports and greenhouse gas byproducts is prompting
industry and government to seek options. One alternative, feedstocks from
plants, promises economic and environmental benefits over fossil fuels.
X-rays Make Sense
Iowa State University researchers believe X-ray technology, a proven
industrial-inspection technique, could be effective for grain yield sensing.
Last Word (reader opinion) - Value Engineering
How do we use the marvelous energy of our political and economic system to
solve problems? First we must develop a procedure for analyzing problems and
then get everyone to agree on an answer. This procedure must be clear and
simple. That is where "Value Engineering" (VE) comes in.
VE is an organized effort directed by analyzing the function of systems,
equipment, installation, operation, maintenance, repair, replacement,
facilities, procedures and supplies to achieve a required function at the
lowest cost of effective ownership, consistent with requirements for
performance, reliability, quality and maintainability.
Inside ASAE
Memoir Gives Glimpse into AE's Past
Former ASAE president and head of the University of California-Davis
Agricultural Engineering Department Roy Bainer (1902-1990) was interviewed in
1972 for an oral history memoir. The result is a very readable and insightful
book, The Engineering of Abundance, which relates the story of Bainer's career
and the mechanization of agriculture. See page 19 for an excerpt and ordering
information.
