Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

JANUARY 1999 - VOL. 6 NO. 1

Features

Models Predict Waterway Health
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are being used to address concerns related to environmental problems caused by altered land use and management practices. GIS helps assess and optimize alternative management practice benefits.

The Ontro Self-Heating Container
A Poway, California-based company has developed a self-heating plastic container that can be used for consumer products ranging from beverages and soups to hot oil hair treatments.

Joint Strategy Targets Farm Waste
The USDA and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are working together to develop a strategy to minimize water quality and public health impacts of animal feeding operations.

A Brighter Future
Public sector agricultural engineering staff has been decreasing -- especially at the international level and in developed countries. To address this concern 20 think tank participants from international, national, public and private sectors discussed the role of agricultural engineering, its problems and its potential.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Spreading Manure Education
A recent swine lagoon dam failure in North Carolina impacted numerous areas throughout the United States.
Neighboring South Carolina felt the effects and concerns intensified with proposals to build two large swine slaughter operations in the state. These concerns led to creation of Regulation R.61-43, "Standards for the Permitting of Animal Agricultural Facilities," in June 1998.
