Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

FEBRUARY 1999 - VOL. 6 NO. 2

Features

The College Experience
To help define why women remain underrepresented in engineering careers, Goodman Research Group, Inc. (GRG) is conducting a three-year, nationwide research study of women enrolled in university engineering programs.

Ethanol Turns 20-Something
Ethanol was introduced in the United States as a way to reduce the country's dependence on imported fuel and to enhance markets for locally produced grain. Since then, numerous environmental, performance, economic and health benefits have been documented.

Logging Production Data
A lumber production company is an unlikely scene for infrared sensors or computers. But a cooperative effort between the University of Maine and Sonoco has brought the new technology to the mill to help maintain its competitive edge in a tough economy.

The Plastic Advantage
The Pennsylvania State University recently opened its Center for Plasticulture to develop cutting-edge plasticulture technology for horticultural crop producers in the Northeast United States. The center uses Integrated Crop Management models to develop production systems for economically and ecologically sound horticultural programs.

Last Word (reader opinion) - AFIA Declares Victory
In spring 1998, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its latest edition of AP-42, Compilation of Air Pollution Emission Factors, Section 9.9.1, Grain Elevators and Grain Processing Plants -- i.e., feed mills.
For the first time in more than a decade, the feed industry now enjoys a document that represents older, existing operations as well as new, modern feed mills using the latest technologies. Plus, overall, there are significant reductions in the stated emission factors.
