Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

OCTOBER 1998 - VOL. 5 NO. 10

Features

Sharing the Land
City dwellers who crave the scenic, slow-paced quiet of the country threaten to take over space needed for agricultural and other open land uses. Planners hope to develop strategies to accommodate both worlds.

Pesticide Problems
Environmental and human health concerns related to pesticides has led to new application equipment. However, it is often unsatisfactorily transferred to field practice. The Agricultural Engineering Branch of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has responded by initiating a program to improve this situation.

A Sea of Electricity
The first tidal power plant in the world, constructed more than 30 years ago in France, is becoming a model for similar plants being considered in other countries.

Fuel Crisis Heats Up
Nearly half the world's population lives in areas where wood fuel is scarce. However, national and international awareness has improved and governments are increasing their involvement to address the problem.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Fighting Hunger and Poverty
The human race added 79 million members to its ranks in 1997 and another 78 million will join this year. The United Nations reports hundreds of millions -- perhaps up to 1 billion -- people live in hunger and poverty. Nearly 30 nations are dealing with severe food shortages.

The Department of Energy's (DOE) national laboratory system can be a key contributor in the search for solutions. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, in Richland, Washington, has established the Agriculture and Food Processing Initiative.

Reflections on Orlando
Whether you consider it from a professional or extracurricular activities viewpoint, ASAE's 1998 Annual International Meeting was excellent, says ASAE President Gale Holloway. Here's his perspective of the meeting, and an invitation to all ASAE members to let their needs be known.
