Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

JULY 1998 VOL. 5 NO. 7

Features

Microwaves in Manufacturing
Microwave ovens are finding new uses outside of the kitchen. An Australian company recently developed a way to use microwaves to produce wool products more efficiently.

The New Masonry Code
Three professional societies joined forces to sponsor the new Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (ACI 530-95/ASCE 5-95/TMS 402-95). The code aims to dictate new masonry construction and improve the performance of such structures.

Waste in the Next Millennium
Decentralized waste management -- changing waste into fertilizer -- is an issue that will concern environmental managers and farmers during the next decade. Research in the United Kingdom is identifying advantages in recycling substances to nourish the land.

Multibody Dynamics for Off-Road Vehicles
Multibody dynamics software programs can be used to solve vehicle dynamics problems involving ride, handling, lateral stability and structural load prediction. Engineers are finding these programs increasingly useful as machinery designs become more complex.

Last Word (reader opinion) Wanted: Visiting Scholars
The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service CSREES and the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) recently established a visiting scholar program to increase collaboration with land grant universities regarding international marketing and trade. The program focuses on increasing public understanding of the importance of trade in the U.S. economy and enhancing the capacity of agricultural firms to be competitive in global markets. University faculty are encouraged to participate.
