Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

October 2006 - VOL. 13 NO. 8

FEATURES

* Hydrogen Technologies
Down the road and into the 21st century, hydrogen – found in abundance on our planet – will most assuredly enable new energy technologies in the oil-depleting future. “Domestically produced hydrogen can help to reduce dependence on imported sources of energy and cut down on environmentally harmful emissions,” writes Jim Fischer and Janine Finnell. Read on.
* Lab-on-a-chip Biosensor
How will plants grow in outer space? How do plant cells detect gravity?
“ ... the technology to do dynamic experiments in microgravity was not available,” explains D. Marshall Porterfield, a Purdue University research team member, “so we built it.” Experiments’ results break new ground, but the technology that enabled the research is even more exciting.
* The Other Bioenergy Solution
“Despite the general preference for liquid fuels ... there is another form of energy that merits equal attention ... energy from organic wastes, an age-old biological process called anaerobic digestion,” asserts author Ann Wilkie. A solution lauded for its renewability, it also protects the environment, creates jobs, and boasts local economies.
* Enhancing Returns
“Adoption of conservation tillage has great potential to enhance agricultural economic returns and conserve regional water resources in a cost-effective manner,” says a trilogy from Georgia’s USDA-ARS Natural Resource Conservation Center. Compared to irrigation, it’s feasible in most situations, little to no capital required, and unhampered by socio-economic interests.
