Engineering &
Technology for a Sustainable World
March 2006 - VOL. 13 NO. 2
FEATURES
* Gone With the Wind
In the second installment of a series on energy, Jim Fischer and colleagues address a fast-growing, inexpensive source of power: the whirling blades of turbines turning wind into megawatts. As natural gas prices soar, wind power is an appealing bargain. With improved reliability and efficiency, the future suggests more and more of us will be going with the wind.

Center-Pivot Irrigation
Automation of irrigation scheduling with feedback data from the crop or soil can simplify life for busy irrigation managers. Researchers at the Bushland, Texas USDA-ARS station with co-authors Troy Peters and Steve Evett are developing and testing technologies for center pivots using crop leaf temperature, which eliminates the “hassle factor.”
*
Tackling One $melly Problem
Eeew! Concentrated animal feeding operations often struggle with offensive odors. With more manure than a lagoon or budget can handle, what’s a farmer to do? Chuzhao Lin and engineeers at Pro-Act Microbial offer a dollarwise solution: a manure lagoon treatment system that targets the smell, solid problems, and aids in compliance of nutrient management programs.
*
Plant Factories Blossom
Although plant factories are nothing new, Eiichi Ono and Hiroyuki Watanabe herald the steady growth, note the ups and downs, and highlight factory projects in Japan. Even if burgeoning Japanese production is due to unique circumstances — land shortage, high labor cost, and more — new technologies hold great promise for many other countries.
