Engineering &
Technology for a Sustainable World
January/February 2006 - VOL. 13 NO. 1
FEATURES
* CEA in Antarctica
The University of Arizona Controlled Environment Agriculture Center developed a state-of-the-art South Pole growth chamber, and Gene Giacomelli and colleagues can’t say enough about the importance of engineering biology and controlled environment agriculture (CEA). “We want to excite young people with high tech, computer-controlled, intelligent computational decision-support procedures within resource-efficient, high-value crop production systems based on CEA!”
* Automated Quality Assurance
NoodleScan© and TrueGrade© take guesswork out and put essential quality information in, according to Canadian Grain Commission scientists.
* Canal Automation
More flexibility in receiving water, flows remaining more constant, and canal water losses reduced: tall orders for canals because of long delay-times for water to flow through canal sections and sudden flow changes upstream gradually arriving downstream. How to meet the expectations of farmers? Bert Clemmens has some answers.
*Challenges and Opportunities
Energy is a critical issue in the United States and around the globe. Jim Fischer and Janine Finnell hope, through a series of articles, to engage ASABE members in joining the U.S. Department of Energy in developing a prosperous energy future: “We are confident that members have the technical expertise and the important desire for ‘energy responsibility.’ This first article and future features will contribute to the overall goals and function of our professional Society, and we eagerly look forward to comments.”
