MARCH 2005 - VOL. 12 NO. 2

FEATURES

Globetrotting to Tool Up ... 7
John Inman reports on EIMA the annual Italian farm and gardening equipment show. "One of the largest and best," says the California machinery aficionada. Being an EIMA attendee for now 23 years, Inman remarks on the changes and growth of the show from floor displays and overall organization to the ever-increasing number of manufacturers participating.

Bringing Fallacies to Light ... 9
Joel Cuello and Gilberto Costa expose three radiation measurement fallacies of plant photosynthesis. Leaving the quandaries of the quantum system behind, both authors advocate the use of a newly developed phytometric system however, it must meet certain critical criteria.

Harnessing On-Shore Waves Energy ... 11
A Waipapa, New Zealand, case study focuses on harnessing and measuring on-shore wave energy. "Certainly, bright new ideas and methods for energy creation are needed, or civilization may come to a screeching halt," warns author Babar Mahmood. Wave energy may be the power wave of the future.

Tender or Tough? ... 13
"Tenderness is a major factor in consumer satisfaction of beef, and consumers are willing to pay for products they know will be tender," assert Sheila Grant and Carol Lorenzen. Customers standing before refrigerated meat cases, pondering choices, are proof of that. A University of Missouri-Columbia research group, including the authors, is developing a biosensor technique capable of predicting meat tenderness through the detection of calpastatin. A predictably juicy and tender steak may soon be on your grill.
