Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2004 - VOL. 11 NO. 1

FEATURES

Ultraviolet Disinfection ... 7
What about those pathogens in your hot cider? While a majority of food borne illnesses are related to consumer handling, many originate with the food processor. Larry Forney and John Pierson offer fresh-squeezed information on improved methods of UV processing for fruit juices.

Operations to Reduce Fuels in Western Forests ... 9
Bruce Hartsough addresses a current hot topic: intense and destructive forest fires. Why not remedy the problem by using fire at frequent intervals? The author examines physical removal or modification of fuels, possibly in combination with fire; equipment and methods available for fuel reduction treatments; and another option mastication.

Trapping Flies with Acoustics ... 11
A patent-pending artificial calling song attracts female Mediterranean fruit flies nasty but common agricultural pests in most parts of the world as well as culprits of damage to more than 250 different types of fruit. The technique described in this feature can be used to attract the female flies in order to monitor and control the buzzing foragers.

Two is Better than One ... 13
The popularity of the use of UV disinfection in both drinking water and wastewater treatment is growing. However, application in a two-stage process including biological degradation to destroy organic contaminants is not common. Dena McMartin suggests that pre-treatment UV exposure, shown effective for cleaving complex, toxic organic molecules, may be good for reducing shock loading to existing biological treatment cells at industrial facilities.
