DECEMBER 2004 - VOL. 11 NO. 10

FEATURES

Riparian Forest Buffers ... 7
The research of George Vellidis and Richard Lowrance demonstrates that streamside ecosystems are excellent sinks of nutrients, herbicides, and sediments. And with proper design, the authors say, riparian forest buffers can produce long-term improvements in water quality a "silver bullet" for nonpoint, source pollution to streams, rivers, and lakes.

Microwaves Speed Up Solar Wood Drying ... 9
It can often take several months even years to dry some hardwoods properly. However, Graham Brodie knows his wood and how to speed up the drying process: microwaving, which raises the internal temperature so fast that water inside the wood cells boils. The steam blasts tiny holes throughout the cell walls, making connection pathways for the remaining moisture to escape.

Determining Dust Potentials from Cattle Feedlot Soils ... 11
Annoying and odorous, dust from feedlots is also an avenue for pathogen dispersion and nutrient loss. Bryan Woodbury and Dan Miller explore a simple, inexpensive lab technique for investigating dust generation potential and evaluating dust control management strategies.

Standardization of Electronics in Machinery Systems ... 13
ISO 11783, commonly called ISOBUS, utilizes a controller area network to transfer data between multiple points on agricultural equipment allowing for information sharing among vehicle systems and improving operating efficiency. Comprehensive ISO Compliance Certification, Matthew Darr and Keith Hudson insist, is the major step into the future, pushing agricultural equipment into the electronic age.
