Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

MARCH 2003 - VOL. 10 NO. 3

Features

Profitable to the Last Drop ... 5
A research team from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Archer Daniels Midland, and National Corn Growers are solving one of the many challenges in agricultural processing: How to cost-effectively extract higher-value products from corn fiber hulls. Their cooperative goal? To extract valuable components -- corn fiber, sugars, a higher value animal feedstock -- from a low-cost residue from wet corn-milling operations.

E-Diesel Explained ... 7
Energy issues -- dependence on overseas oil, tightening emission standards, converting crops to alternative fuel sources -- are often front page fodder. Pumped into today's press are related fuel stories, articles on E-diesel among them. But what do you know about E-Diesel and its evolution? AlanHansen and Peter Lyne give historical perspective to the renewable alternative fuel for diesel engines. In the next issue of Resource, further elucidation: E-Diesel and Exhaust Pollution Evaluated.

Baffled by Wetland Hydrology? ... 9
Though some specific guidelines have evolved, defining a wetland is still a tricky task. For those seeking answers, defining factors are often a slippery slope ridden with potholes of contradictions. Sonia Jacobsen explains the inherent problems and elaborates on three factors that will put readers on sure footing.

Total Maximum Daily Loads, Part Two ... 11
David Bosch explained TMDLs and the program history in a previous Resource issue. He continues the discussion in this, the second of a two-part feature. Bosch answers further questions about the currently hot topic: Why are TMDLs necessary? and how will they impact you?
