Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

JULY 2003 - VOL. 10 NO. 7

Features

Wind Farming ... 7
Clean energy is the way the wind is blowing, even if like Job, most farmers aren't sure where it comes from or where it blows. If it can save the family farm, more and more farmers are willing to give it a try. Long a staple in Europe, energy generated by wind and wind turbines is reliable, environmentally friendly, and provides, for many, a money-making opportunity.

Tactical Animal Management ... 9
New and improved ways of improving animal care with electronic measurements and real-time data analysis are on the horizon. Tactical Animal Management (TAM) automates many production systems for large numbers of animals but also provides the all-important individual-animal care.

Central Tire Inflation in Agriculture ... 11
CTI systems -- adapted from well proven military technology -- can be beneficial for agricultural vehicles by improving the ride, increasing efficiency of power delivery, and reducing rut depth. Only a few CTI systems are commercially available, but that could change.

Engineering Optical Sensing Techniques ... 13
The ability to predict the tenderness of beef bought at the supermarket or ordered at a restaurant -- via the calpastatin content -- may be accomplished by biosensor detection of binding to fluorescent-labeled markers. Used at the time of grading, a more accurate assessment of the overall palatability could be available for the consumer in the not-too-distant future.
