Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

May 2002 - VOL. 9 NO. 5

Features

Old Drains, New Challenges ... 7
Researchers at the University of Illinois are studying the hydrologic and water quality impacts of tile-drainage networks.

Cluster Criteria ... 9
An optical mass flow sensor has recently been developed by the department of biosystems engineering at Auburn University.

Fertilizer Sense ... 11
Making nitrogen (N) fertilizer recommendations based on inadequate knowledge of a soil's N supply can lead to inefficient N use. Remote sensing techniques that use the crop to indicate its N status could help improve N management.

Streamlining Processes ... 13
Process control problems can be costly for food processors managing expenses associated with raw ingredients and waste streams. These glitches can be solved faster and with less disruption to operations than previous methods by using ultrasonic measurement technologies that perform on-line, real-time, non-invasive product stream monitoring.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Tree Supply and Demand ... 33
How much forest do we need? What types of forests do we need? Where should they be located? Who, or which organization, should take on the challenge at an international level?
These questions must be addressed objectively considering human resources, produced assets and natural capital. Only then can we establish solid policies for forests and for society.
