Engineering & Technology for a
Sustainable World
AUGUST 2002 - VOL. 9 NO. 8
Features
Being a Good Neighbor ... 7
As the demographics of rural America change, regulatory agencies and the public
are scrutinizing production agriculture, in particular, concentrated animal
feeding operations. These operations continue to rely on current technological
and engineering solutions and encourage reasonable regulations to ensure the
environment is protected.
Dealing with Dead Livestock ... 9
Facing economic and environmental concerns, farmers are looking for innovative
ways to dispose of dead animals. In Ohio, farmers can become certified to
compost an easy, inexpensive and safe method to deal with livestock
mortalities.
Seeing Soil in 3-D ... 11
A long-term project to produce three-dimensional maps of the glacial geology of
the central Great Lakes region will provide valuable data to create
science-based, decision-support systems. Information from these systems can be
used in making decisions on various issues such as agricultural land loss,
erosion, sedimentation and agrichemical use.
A Unified Front ... 14
Committees unite to consolidate all of ASAE's program criteria into a
single ABET accreditation criterion, but under the broad umbrella of
"Agricultural Engineering and Similarly Named Programs." Now at stake is
choosing the name "Biological Engineering," and all that goes with it -- the
development of the discipline, curriculum and profession.

It's time. If ASAE does not demonstrate leadership now, this Society will lose
responsibility of the professional, technical and academic leadership of
biological science-based engineering. Five key facets address the scope of our
role.
