Features
Land Laser ... 7
Laser profile measurement system equipment -- a laser profilometer -- has
recently been developed at the USDA-ARS national Soil Dynamics Laboratory in
Auburn, Ala. The laser profilometer allows users to quickly gather data and use
scientific methods to determine soil disruption differences caused by tillage
components.
Fill 'er Up -- with Biodiesel ... 9
Although research on biodiesel fuels began more than 20 years ago, it recently
intensified as this alternative's emissions benefits have become better
understood. Biodiesel emits less carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons and
particulates than traditional fossil fuels. Iowa State University is one
institution working to develop and test biodiesel products and their
applications.
Hitting the Mark ... 11
When fully developed, smart sprayers could benefit agricultural producers by
increasing profits and reducing negative environmental impact.
Save the Bay ... 13
An online Innovative Technology Clearinghouse provides technology solutions to
potential customers, users, regulators and policy makers and provides
information about priority Chesapeake Bay protection and restoration needs.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Ecoagriculture... 33
A new concept called "ecoagriculture" emphasizes higher, more-sustainable crop
yields so that more low-quality land in farming regions can be left to
wildlife. This concept will help interconnect the world's nature preserves and
amplify their ability to sustain wild species.
