Features
Driverless Tractors ... 7
A challenge for engineers is to devise vehicle automation and navigation
systems that also provide a safe work environment.
Separate Ways ... 9
Research by a graduate student in 1995 led to a design for the Michigan State
University swine research facility that has a different manure handling system
than typically found in the United States. The new system keeps feces separate
from urine.
Eco Sensitive Roads ... 11
A method now available to control storm water heating is to use permeable
pavement, which can help reduce the impacts of urbanization on receiving
waters. Permeable pavements are composed of interlocking concrete paving blocks
separated by open drainage cells that are filled with soil and gravel.
Comfortable Ride ... 13
Research in the United Kingdom, funded mainly by the Ministry of Agriculture,
Fisheries and Food, has led to development of a new generation of chicken
transport vehicles with controlled mechanical ventilation.

Last Word (reader opinion) - From Lab to Farm ... 33
Guidance system commercialization has had little less success over the years.
To move to an automation age in agriculture engineers must provide farmers with
examples of how they can use this technology. They will not initially ask for
it through their dealer organizations because without examples in the field,
making the change will not make sense to them.
