Engineering & Technology for a
Sustainable World
March 2001 - VOL. 8 NO. 3
Features
Sewage Strategies ... 7
The Critical Point Monitoring program is being developed to provide a control
approach for operation, monitoring and maintenance activities to ensure that
on-site wastewater technologies consistently meet performance requirements.
Wastewater Control ... 9
Effective management and monitoring helps ensure a wastewater system's
long-term reliability. A tool that offers an integrated approach to
decentralized wastewater management is a computerized wastewater information
management system.
Pumping Up ... 11
Roughly 25 percent of the U.S. population is served by decentralized sewage
systems. It is predicted that 37 percent of new development will use
decentralized systems. Homeowners often have no idea their system needed
maintenance -- until the system malfunctions.
Model Framework for On-site Wastewater ... 13
The on-site wastewater treatment field is in transition, changing from an
approach based on subsurface domestic disposal to prevent human contact, to one
based on treatment that protects public health while sustaining environmental
quality.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Under Inspection ... 33
The single most commonly stated and debated word in the on-site industry today
is "management." To many, talking on-site management is like taking a trip to
the dentist.
Yet, like the agony of a toothache, this situation will not get better unless
we step up to the problem and find a solution. The good news with on-site
treatment, and to some the bad news, is that there are many aspects of this
issue and the potential exists for a variety of solutions. Agencies such as NSF
International in Ann Arbor, Mich., are offering ways to help. Through the input
of many recognized experts in the on-site wastewater community, NSF has
developed a program to address one aspect of on-site treatment.
