Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

December 2001 - VOL. 8 NO. 12

Features

Tractors and Tigers ... 7
"Belangtara" is Malaysian for "wild tiger," the name a group from the University Putra Malaysia chose for their quarter-scale tractor. The Belangtara made its debut in the ASAE Quarter-Scale Tractor International Student Design Competition in June.

Sediment Origins ... 9
Many agricultural producers in the Minnesota River Basin have questioned conventional thought that most of the sediment in the Minnesota River comes from upland farm fields. Farmers believe they are unnecessarily being asked to change tillage practices from moldboard plowing to conservation tillage.

Device Speeds Compaction Measuring Process ... 11
A simple method for on-the-spot soil compaction measurement could benefit farmers, researchers and equipment manufacturers. To meet this need, engineers and students at the Agriculture Technology Centre (ATC) in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, have developed an inexpensive soil pressure transducer and placement system.

Embracing Innovation ... 13
Innovation adoption studies have tested a range of products and systems from a new typewriter keyboard to improved water-boiling practices in developing countries. Although an innovation can provide more benefits than a previous idea, proper integration into the proposed user group's way of life is needed for the technology to catch on.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Industry Guidance ... 33
This author believes that the real trouble in today's economy is that we are headed in the wrong direction. Businesses behave as if people are scarce and nature is abundant. This type of approach will only leadto ruin.
Natural capitalism reintegrates ecological with economic goals. Everyone must learn to value our scarcest resource, the earth. Without it we will cease to exist.
