Features
Oil and Pigs Do Mix ... 7
University of Minnesota researchers are sprinkling vegetable oil in pig barns
to control odors.
Straw Bales Stack up for Buildings ... 9
An old construction material is making a comeback as a new alternative for
buildings. Straw bale-built structures are emerging throughout the world on
farm, commercial and residential property.
Beating the Heat ... 11
A Florida dairy cow's milk production decreases up to 25 percent in summer if
housing and ventilation are inadequate. Research shows that the most practical
methods for reducing heat stress are shade, ventilation and cooling.
Bottom-up Approach ... 13
Recently, University College Dublin (UCD) and Virginia Tech (VT) took a
bottom-up approach to designing a student and faculty exchange program.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Grain Bin Safety ... 33
Purdue University reported in 1996 that at least 159 suffocation deaths
occurred in on-farm grain storage bins from 1964 to 1994 in the 10 leading
grain producing states. Grain bin manufacturers, agricultural engineers and
safety specialists must aggressively pursue developing an ASAE standard on
basic design requirements for a fall and suffocation prevention system for
grain bin storage structures.
