June 2000 - VOL. 7 NO. 6

Features

Developing Economies ... 7
Understanding the issues that link international trade to economic development, resource degradation and environmental quality can be a challenge. Some have blamed free trade -- or trade liberalization -- for reducing environmental quality in developing countries. Upon closer analysis it may not be free trade in itself, but the lack of trade issue related laws, institutions and practices that surface as the biggest environmental enemy.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Stop, Look and Listen ... 21
During the past decade, we have spent more than $100 million in U.S. federal tax revenue to enhance the safety and health of farmers, ranchers and agricultural workers. Much of this money has gone to reminding those of us in the profession, through the use of graphs and tables, that people are still being injured and killed while producing our food.
