Engineering & Technology for a
Sustainable World
July 2000 - VOL. 7 NO. 7
Features
Tropical Fruit Gas ... 7
University of Maine students and faculty are studying a new thin film sensor to
track fruit ripeness. The researchers are monitoring bananas for natural
emissions of ethylene gas to develop a sensor that could be useful for growers
and food processors.
Fishy Business ... 9
Cornell University's efforts in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems 15 years ago
began to focus on creating, developing and refining technologies to produce
food fish economically. Creating a new agriculture industry such as aquaculture
could provide more opportunities for producers.
Using Nitrogen Wisely ... 11
The USDA-ARS's computerized nitrogen (N) decision aid helps crop producers
apply fertilizer. The decision aid's main goals are to improve N fertilizer
use, reduce risk of nitrate contamination in ground water and reduce costly N
fertilizer losses to rainfall runoff.
Global Business and Engineering ... 13
Agricultural engineering graduates seeking employment can enhance their
opportunities by preparing for a global career. Taking additional courses
designed to prepare for an international experience could be a good investment.
Studying a second language could pay off.

In 1998, Uzbekistan spent 11 percent of its gross national product on education
and more than 125 new colleges and lyceums -- specialized high schools --
opened there. More than 500 Uzbekistan students are now studying in developed
countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, France, Germany,
Italy and Canada. However, Uzbekistan, as other countries under economic and
policy transition, is facing serious problems in its educational system.
