Engineering & Technology for a Sustainable World

February 2000 - VOL. 7 NO. 2

Features

Enlightenment for Mapping Systems ... 7
New tools that use geographic information systems (GIS) help construct insolation maps based on spatial modeling to account for elevation, surface orientation, sky obstruction by surrounding topographic features and atmospheric conditions.

Harvesting an Idea ... 9
The traditional combine could soon be facing competition from an alternative harvesting process being developed by a Canadian company. The "McLeod harvest method" aims to add the best of binder and threshing machine harvesting processes to the combine harvester process.

No Room for Error ... 11
A technique called multi-purpose grid mapping (MPGM) is being studied to generate yield maps. The goal is to use yield maps for post applications using software developed to reduce errors in yield monitor data due to unknown crop width.

Chicory Roots out Nutrients in Soil ... 13
Forage deficits can be overcome using combinations or sequences of plant resources that tolerate or can adapt to growing condition variations throughout a season. Often, these attributes are found in plants not typically considered forage resources -- such as chicory.
