Features

From Produce to Plastics ... 7
Agricultural biomass can be processed to make plastic for many applications and products. Using biomass could reduce agricultural waste, petroleum use, pollution and dependence on non-renewable fossil fuel sources.

Tractor Tests ... 9
For nearly 100 years the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory has provided unbiased safety and quality information to public and private consumers.

Edamame ... 11
A soybean that has long been popular in Japan is becoming the snack food of choice in the western United States. Edamame beans are also a source of vitamin C, vitamin E and dietary fiber.

A Novel Model ... 13
The Coupled Land Atmosphere Simulation Program (CLASP II) evaluates aquifer-land-surface-atmosphere interactions at the watershed scale.

Last Word (reader opinion) - Trees and Biotechnology ... 33
The growing population uses more wood and paper than ever for housing, communications, personal hygiene and other purposes. Society is also allocating more forested land to parks and nature reserves where harvesting trees is prohibited or restricted. How will society simultaneously meet two daunting challenges: that of producing more wood on fewer acres and that of increased protection of the forest environment worldwide?
In the long run, biotechnology -- appropriately and carefully utilized -- offers the most feasible solution.
