Copyright Questions

Seeking permission to use ASABE copyrighted material

Obtaining permission from another publisher to use material in an ASABE publication

Can I post my ASABE-copyrighted documents on my website or my employer's website?

Seeking permission to use ASABE-copyrighted material

There is no need to request permission if you will be using the material in another ASABE publication. However, if you want to use figures, tables, or significant portions of text in a publication that you are preparing for submission to another publisher, you will need to request permission. Send your request or question to Donna Hull at hull@asabe.org or fax to 269-429-3852.

Some publishers require a standard copyright permission form. If you aren’t using such a form, then indentify the ASABE material you would like permission to use, the publisher, and the name of the publication where you will be using the material in your message. For example:

"I am requesting non-exclusive permission to use figures 1 and 2 from Applied Engineering in Agriculture, volume (5), issue 1, pages 5 and 6, in a book titled Mechanics of Fruit Harvesting. The publisher is Johnson Publishers."

ASABE normally grants graduate students permission to include the full text of papers they have authored in their theses or dissertations. Contact Donna Hull for authorization.

Obtaining permission from another publisher to use material in an ASABE publication

If you are preparing a document for submission to an ASABE publication, you do not need to use a specific form when requesting permission from another publisher to use figures, tables, or other copyrighted material. As the author, you are responsible for ensuring that you have received appropriate permission to use another publisher's copyrighted materials in an ASABE publication. There is no need to submit such authorizations to ASABE, but you should keep them in your own records. This is an example of a standard copyright release form.

Can I post my ASABE-copyrighted journal or meeting paper on my website or my employer's website?

Yes, ASABE allows authors to post the final version of their journal or meeting papers on their own website or on their employer 's website. Authors do not need to request permission for this. However, this authorization extends only to the original author; it does not allow others to post the copyrighted material on their sites. Please forward those requests to Donna Hull at hull@asabe.org.
