Designing Structural Components for Machines
This textbook covers the design of structural components as they occur in machines with a focus on applying statics and mechanics of deformable solids to the solution of engineering design problems. The text is the culmination of a respected professor's lifetime of studying and teaching in the areas of engineering mechanics, finite element analysis, and structural analysis and design. The book begins with a review of the basics of component design followed by a chapter on using computers for design assistance. This is followed by chapters covering designing for axial tension and compression, designing connections for axial loading, designing pinned trusses, and design for bending, torsion and combined loads. A chapter on designing a floor crane walks students through the design techniques learned in the previous chapters. There is also a chapter with 14 unique design projects. Sample problem sets are included at the end of chapters. Design equations and design data as well as the problems are given for both systems of units, US and SI.

The book includes 95 pages of appendices on specifications and code, section properties, and design assistance tables that provides the database content essential to the design process.

The subject matter material in this book can be taught in a senior-level machine design sequence. It has been assumed that the student has completed a course in statics and a course in the mechanics of deformable solids.

"Three ingredients are needed for a successful design: an analysis procedure, design criteria, and a database. The systematic integration of these three ingredients makes this book unique."

"New" Problem Solving with Excel 2007
This four-hour training video on CD-ROM will show you how to make engineering problem solving more effective, less time consuming, and easier to communicate to others. Through video, audio and watching the actual steps on example spreadsheets the user can build skills in working with names in formulas, data filtering, optimization, goal seeking for iterative solutions, data tables, lookup functions, and macros and forms. This CD-ROM will help engineers and other problem solvers follow a logical format and approach when using Excel spreadsheets to solve engineering problems. The video package, produced by Purdue professor Dennis Buckmaster, grew out of his workshop experiences with students, faculty, and practicing engineers. The presentation assumes the user is familiar with basic spreadsheet skills such as formula editing, graphing, and formatting. In addition to being a training video, the package serves as a valuable reference.
