Introduction to the ASABE Student Engineer of the Year Scholarship

Funded by the late Dr. Roger R. Yoerger and Mrs. Laura M. Yoerger, through the ASABE Foundation.

The Award goes to the outstanding engineering undergraduate student in the United States and Canada.

The basis for judging includes scholarship excellence, outstanding character, personal development, student membership in ASABE and leadership qualities.

ASAE Student Engineer of the Year Scholarship

Recipients

The award consists of a $1,000 cash award. The winner is chosen by the P-120 Student Organizations Committee. The committee reserves the right to not award the scholarship during a particular year.

The Student Engineer of the Year Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding agricultural/biological engineering undergraduate student in the United States or Canada. The award consists of a $1,000 cash award funded by the late Dr. Roger R. Yoerger and Mrs. Laura M. Yoerger, through the ASABE Foundation.

Eligibility Requirements: 

The applicant must:

  • have COMPLETED at least one full-year of undergraduate study and must
  • not be a graduating senior in the semester/term in which they are applying."
    This allows students graduating in December of the application year to receive the scholarship; 
  • major in an agricultural/biological engineering curriculum that is accredited by ABET or CEAB;
  • be a student member of ASABE; and
  • have a GPA of at least 3.0 (or equivalent on 4.0 basis).


  • *For this grant, financial aid is limited to tuition, fees, books, and on-campus room and board.

Basis for Judging:

  • 20% Excellence in scholarship (special consideration given to students who showed marked improvement or continued excellence in academic work from Freshman to Sophomore to Junior years);
  • 10% Outstanding character and personal development;
  • 25% Student membership in ASAE and active participation in a student branch organization. (If an ASAE student branch does not exist at host school, then there should be evidence of active participation in a comparable student professional organization);
  • 15% Participation in overall school activities;
  • 25% Leadership qualities, creativity, initiative, and responsibility; and
  • 5% Level of financial self-support provided by student.

In addition to the above, judges will review the candidate's paper -- "My Goals in the Engineering Profession" -- for additional evidence of his or her qualifications.

Application Procedure:

Applicant shall personally complete the following: 1) application form (including signature of department head or representative), and 2) an essay, not exceeding 500 words, addressing the subject: "My Goals in the Engineering Profession"

The completed application form and student paper is to be submitted to "ASABE Student Engineer of the Year Scholarship", c/o ASABE headquarters, 2950 Niles Road, St. Joseph, Michigan 49085. The application should be received on or before March 17 at ASABE headquarters.

The winner and corresponding department will be notified by May 1. Following selection of the winner a joint announcement will be made by an ASABE national news release and by individual school. The school is to present scholarship to winning student at earliest appropriate function conducted at the institution involved, i.e., award dinner, honors day, etc. (An ASABE Board member, located nearest the winning institution, may be designated to represent the Society and present the award if institution regulations permit.)
