T T # 3   Field Tour of the Island of Oahu

Proceed toward Central Oahu to observe the diversity of soils. Substantial transformations of land-uses from plantation crops to diversi-fied agriculture, and associated environmental changes, highlight soil erosion problems, nonpoint pollution from the Pearl Harbor basin to the estuaries, erosion re s e a rch on highly weathered soils (especially oxisols).  Efforts for enhancing water quality enhance-ment/combating nonpoint source pollution, rusle C-factor research in support of NRCS conservation planning work. Watershed demonstration and hydrologic unit area cons rvation projects.

Box lunch is included. Tour includes motor-coach pickup and return to the Ala Moana Hotel Guests may also register for this tour (at cost).

T T # 2 Field Trip to the Island of Hawaii

Saturday, January 6, 2001           5:30 a.m.-7:20 p.m.

Drive along the Eastern side of the big island of Hawaii. Explore the Hamakua Coast and prevailing volcanic ash (andic) soils with very unique and unusual physical and hydrological properties. Note emerging agricultural and forestry activities replacing sugar cane, cross the island, lunch (box lunch provided) in Waimea/Kamuela. Continue toward Kona. Observe transitions in soils and land uses towards the dry (leeward) side.  Arrive Kona. Fly back to Honolulu. Participants will have the option of staying overnight in Kona and more days on the big island on their own. Guests may also register for this tour.
