Drive along the Eastern side of the big island of Hawaii. Explore
the Hamakua Coast and prevailing volcanic ash (andic) soils with very unique and unusual
physical and hydrological properties. Note emerging agricultural and forestry activities
replacing sugar cane, cross the island, lunch (box lunch provided) in Waimea/Kamuela.
Continue toward Kona. Observe transitions in soils and land uses towards the dry (leeward)
side. Arrive Kona. Fly back to Honolulu. Participants will have the option of
staying overnight in Kona and more days on the big island on their own. Guests may also
register for this tour.
