of our programs key lead-in speakers include:
DEWAYNE DILL - QUALITY MANAGEMENT STANDARDS
Dewayne has been a Senior Consultant with Dairy Strategies since the inception
of the company five years ago. Prior to that he spent time in the feed division
of Land O' Lakes and as an Assistant Professor and Dairy Extension Specialist
at the University of Illinois. He received three degrees from the University of
Illinois, completing a Ph.D. in 1989. His expertise is in dairy management
systems with a particular emphasis on computer technology and information
systems. He is the author of many commercial software applications and
continues to leverage technology when appropriate to improve efficiency and
bring value to clients. More recently, he provides leadership to the
introduction of HACCP and ISO principles to dairy businesses. In 1997 the
American Dairy Science Association awarded him the Young Animal Science Leader
Outstanding Agribusiness Award.
CHARLES E. GARDNER - YOUNGSTOCK HEALTH
Dr. Gardner (DVM, MBA), Director of Agway TSPF Heifer Program, Agway Feed and
Nutrition Company, joined Agway in September of 1999. He grew up in southern
New Jersey, and worked on his uncles dairy farm. He attended the College
of Agriculture at Cornell from 1967 1969, then transferred to Veterinary
College, and graduated from Veterinary School in 1973. He joined the
Ackermanville Veterinary Hospital, doing mainly dairy cattle practice. In 1989,
he started Dairy Management Consultants, a practice specializing in dairy herd
management. Dr. Gardner became board certified as a specialist in dairy
practice in 1993, and received an MBA from Moravian College in May of 1999. Dr.
Gardner writes a regular column in Hoards Dairyman.
WILLIAM G. BICKERT - MANURE MANAGEMENT
Dr. Bill Bickert is a Professor in the Agricultural Engineering Department at
Michigan State University. His 25+ years of Extension and research activities
have emphasized livestock facilities, including; designs related to transition
housing for dairy calves, full wall ventilation for barns, improved freestalls,
equipment for separating sand from sand-laden manure, systems for managing
manure, and other innovations in facilities. Previous research dealt with
automated milking systems, which led to the development of an automatic milking
machine detacher. Parlor mechanization and new milking center designs continue
to appear in his work. The overall focus of his efforts is developing designs
for dairy facilities that enhance dairy farm profitability. Manure management
receives special emphasis as an integral aspect of the farm production system
and an issue external to the farm.
MARVIN HOEKEMA - FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
Marvin grew-up on a progressive dairy farm in Washington State. After
completing a B.S. at Washington State University and an M.S. at the University
of Florida, he coordinated the Dairy Business Analysis Project in the southeast
US. He joined Dairy Strategies as a Consultant in 2000. He brings both a
practical and analytical background in managerial economics and dairy business
analysis and management to the consulting team. He currently works on dairy
development, analysis, and risk management projects in the Southeast, South,
and Western US in addition to Dairy Business Decision workshops in Australia
and elsewhere.
