OLIVER KELLY LIVING HISTORY FARM

SATURDAY, JUNE 16th                5:00PM-9:00PM 

The Oliver H. Kelley Farm is a living history farm depicting mid 19th century agricultural life in Minnesota. This National Historic Landmark is the farm of Oliver H. Kelley who founded the Grange in 1867. Today the Kelley Farm comes alive with programs taught by trained and experienced site staff. Dressed in period clothing, historic site guides perform daily farm activities that demonstrate rural life between 1850 and 1876 and teach students about historic agriculture.  A nice pork chop dinner will follow at the farm providing networking opportunities.  Renew old friendships from previous meetings and make new ones.

COST: $47 per person (minimum 40)

            Tour and dinner included. Tour departs from Minneapolis Convention Center

FUN RUN

SUNDAY, JUNE 17th         7:30AM-9:00AM

The Young Professional Community of ASABE is sponsoring the second annual Fun Run/Walk. This event is a 5-kilometer run/walk winding through Minneapolis ending with refreshments during the awards ceremony. All proceeds will go towards supporting future YPC events focused at young member retention during the transition from student to professional. Show your support for the young members of the Society while staying active. Register early, space limited!  All participants will receive a race t-shirt.

COST: $15 per person

            Meet at Convention Center West Doors at 7:30AM to be escorted to start line.

            Race begins at 8:00AM

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Level of Difficulty: Intermediate

Target Audience: Anyone in need of refreshers on how to communicate your ideas effectively.

Objectives: Presentation Skills: Participants will learn keys to organizing, preparing and presenting information. This includes visual aids, do’s and don'ts and speaking skills. Speaking the Language: Participants will learn how to make an effective technical presentation to other technical people. A Different Language: Participants will learn how to make an effective presentation to non-technical people.

Benefits: Employers of engineers nearly always identify the same concern about their engineers: lack of good communication skills. Attendees will learn speaking tips and techniques they can implement immediately, and other suggestions for things to practice and work on as they develop more effective technical communication skills. Four continuing education units are credited for this course.

COST: $75 per person (minimum 18)

 

“AUTISM, ANIMALS AND DESIGN”

TEMPLE GRANDIN, COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY

"I think in pictures," writes ASABE member Temple Grandin, and her so-called visual thinking is a tremendous advantage in her job as a livestock-equipment designer. Grandin's unique skill is a byproduct of her having autism, and she is living proof that those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders can lead highly productive lives with the proper support and understanding. Author of several books, including the revelatory Emergence: Labeled Autistic, and also Animals in Translation, Grandin has been the featured subject on National Public Radio and on such television programs as "48 Hours," "The Today Show" and "Primetime Live." Her insights on animal welfare and autism have enthralled and enlightened audiences, and you will be similarly affected when you hear her in Minneapolis

 

 

INDUSTRY-STUDENT EXCHANGE

The Student-Industry Exchange provides an informal meeting environment for students and professionals.  Young professionals are invited to come and give students a real-world perspective on companies and career paths within their technical interest area.

 

 

WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT ASABE               

MONDAY, JUNE 18th        7:00AM-8:00AM

Location: 101A

Come to an informational session hosted by the Young Professional Community to introduce new and old members alike to the many opportunities available in ASABE. Topics to be addressed include How to Get to Meetings and Conferences, Getting the Most out of Meetings, The Inner Workings of Technical Committees, and Parliamentary Procedure.  Refreshments will be provided.  All members, especially first-timers and preprofessionals are invited to attend.

 

 

YPC BUSINESS MEETING

TUESDAY, JUNE 19th       5:00PM-6:00PM

The YPC business meeting reviews the progress of committees from 2006-2007, updates members on status of events sponsored by the YPC at AIM, and conducts officer elections.  Any professional ASABE member 34 or younger is eligible to run.  Offices include Vice Chair, Meetings Council Representative, Standards Council Representative, Membership Development Council Representative, and Publication Council Representative.
