Tour#2

Lake Pepin

Saturday, June 16 – 8:30AM-4:30PM

The Lake Pepin tour follows one of the most scenic stretches of the Great River Road--a nationally designated scenic highway that hugs the Mississippi River.  Highways 35 and 61 climb and wind to the top of steep wooded limestone river bluffs and plunge down to the shimmering river’s banks at the widest stretch of the river that is designated a “lake” in this region.

The tour begins in Red Wing, on the Minnesota side.  Red Wing will be the largest town on the tour. A quick tour of the Pottery district, historic Main Street and the residential Victorian streets will be conducted.

Frontenac State Park is next on the agenda.  The picturesque park has highlands and lowlands and 15 miles of hiking trails.  The nearby historic town of Frontenac lies in the valley below.  The tour then winds its way into Lake City, the place where waterskiing was invented.  Here, a small marker and museum explains how the sport all began here.  Pepin Heights Orchard, just outside of town, will feature a tour of its cider milling operation.

The last stop in Minnesota is Wabasha, laying claim to being Minnesota’s oldest community.  Most of the buildings are pre-1900 and are refurbished to their original splendor.   The Bald Eagle Watch Observatory is known as one of the best spots for observing the migratory bald eagle in the winter months.   Just outside of town are L.A.R.K. Toys and Meadowlark Shops where a one-of-a-kind wood carved carousel has just opened.  One of the nation’s largest toy collections and wood carved toy displays is also here.  Lunch at the Anderson House.

Crossing into Wisconsin, the terrain is less developed.  The first town reveals what Wisconsin is famous for--cheese.  A tour of Nelson’s cheese shop is a must.  Virgin  forest, practically untouched for centuries, should be in brilliant color. Moving north on the Great River Road, Pepin is the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder with a museum and log cabin open for viewing.

The last stop is the Swedish settlement of Stockholm that is now a magnet for artists.  Many Amish crafts, art galleries, and rustic restaurants in old restored buildings are all framed by the brilliant hardwood forest surrounding it. Tour returns to Minneapolis hotel late afternoon.

Cost: $56.00 per person (minimum 24)

Faribault Mill and Outlet Store

Sunday, June 17 – 10:00AM-3:00PM

Minnesota Governor Pawlenty calls this his favorite factory in Minnesota!

Beginning in 1865 with a one-horse treadmill, five generations of skilled craftsmen have developed this family-owned company into a thriving business.  Faribault Woolen Mill Company survived three fires from 1888 to 1892, rebuilding and expanding from selling yarn to producing fine woven cloth.

In an historic brick mill on the banks of the Cannon River, Faribault Woolen Mill Company employees use high-tech equipment to practice an ancient manufacturing process.  Scouring and blending, dyeing, carding, spinning, weaving and burling all occur under one roof.  A 45 minute tour of the mill shows step-by-step processing of wool to the final product:  the famous Faribault blanket.

Faribault Woolen Mills Company was founded in 1865 in the sleepy farming community of Faribault, Minn. by German immigrant and craftsman Carl H. Klemer, a visionary entrepreneur. His company would outlive his children and their children and flourish for 135 years as America's premier manufacturer of fine woolen blankets and throws.

Created as a company that simply "carded" wool, Klemer's infant mill brushed, cleaned and straightened the fibers in preparation for spinning and weaving by other manufacturers. Klemer used a secondhand, horse driven machine for the process during these formative years. As his business prospered, he added a "state-of-the-art" steam engine, spinning jennies and looms. He also expanded his product line by designing and producing cloth, flannel sheeting, and mostly important blankets.

Klemer believed from the very beginning that his products would be uniquely different in the marketplace if he controlled all components of the design and manufacturing process that transforms raw wool into beautifully woven blankets. Thus began a Faribault tradition of dyeing, carding, spinning, weaving, napping, and finishing in a single location under rigid, uniform conditions using original blanket designs

Faribault Woolen Mills grew and prospered during the early and mid-1900s, and its famous brand name became a symbol of high-quality and craftsmanship..

A photo of the old blanket box and ads.A NEW MILLENNIUM
Faribault Woolen Mill is now poised on the cutting edge of expansion and continued success for the new millennium. Embracing a proud heritage of expert craftsmanship, Faribault continues its position as an industry leader, introducing innovative new products, colors, and styles, while steadfastly maintaining its long heritage of quality.

Over the past several years, Faribault Woolen Mills has acquired the 'Bates of Maine' (est. 1850) bedspread name and archives. These bedspreads are known the world over for their quality and unique styling. In addition, in January of 2003 Faribault Mills expanded into cotton blankets and throws by acquiring 'Beacon Blankets' (est. 1904), located in Westminster, South Carolina. This mill has always been recognized as the finest cotton blanket mill in America.

The combined company is now known as Faribault Mills. They take great pride in saying they are a 100% 'made in America' company. They also take great pride when they hear by industry experts that they are now the best, just not the largest blanket manufacturer in the United States today.

A series of trails wind through this beautiful 500-acre zoological garden:

·        On the Ocean Trail, catch a glimpse of a delightful dolphin and view sea creatures from oceans around the world.

·        The Tropics Trail offers a spectacular journey through an indoor oasis of lush greenery, chattering birds and other tropical animals.  One of the most fascinating exhibits is the rare Southeast Asian sun bear, the smallest of the bear species.  Down below, 55 feet of floor-to-ceiling viewing windows take you into a spellbinding coral reef exhibit of sharks and brilliantly colored tropical fish.

·        Along the Minnesota Trail, listen for the call of the rare trumpeter swan and experience such regional wildlife as puma, beavers and otters in this native lake and forest setting.

·        On the Discovery Trail, meet animals up close at the children’s zoo, or visit the Zoolabs touch tank, where you can touch starfish, feather duster worms and other sea life.  For added excitement, visit the eucalyptus munchers in the koala lodge.

The Minnesota Zoo also offers many special attractions that allow visitors to view animal behavior in special and spectacular setting:
