The International Preprofessional Council (IPC) is pleased to offer the following activities during the Minneapolis meeting. We encourage pre-registration. Student registration entitles you to most of the following events and the full technical program (sessions) free of charge.

 

SATURDAY, JUNE 16

PREPROFESSIONAL/STUDENT MIXER

SATURDAY, JUNE 16       4:00PM-5:00PM

Location: HYATT Poolside

All preprofessionals are invited to attend a mixer to kick off the convention in the Twin Cities.  Don’t miss out on this chance to meet other students, take part in some friendly contests, and have some fun!  A student from the University of Minnesota will be on hand to discuss the fun and hot spots you will want to see and experience.

OLIVER KELLY LIVING HISTORY FARM

SATURDAY, JUNE 16       5:00PM-9:00PM 

The Oliver H. Kelley Farm is a living history farm depicting mid 19th century agricultural life in Minnesota. This National Historic Landmark is the farm of Oliver H. Kelley who founded the Grange in 1867. Today the Kelley Farm comes alive with programs taught by trained and experienced site staff. Dressed in period clothing, historic site guides perform daily farm activities that demonstrate rural life between 1850 and 1876 and teach students about historic agriculture.  A nice pork chop dinner will follow at the farm providing networking opportunities.  Renew old friendships from previous meetings and make new ones.

COST: $47.00 (minimum 40)

Tour and pork chop dinner included. Tour departs from Minneapolis Convention Center

FUN RUN

SUNDAY, JUNE 17             7:30AM-9:00AM

The Young Professional Community of ASABE is sponsoring the second annual Fun Run/Walk. This event is a 5-kilometer run/walk winding through Minneapolis ending with refreshments during the awards ceremony. All proceeds will go towards supporting future YPC events focused at young member retention during the transition from student to professional. Show your support for the young members of the Society while staying active. Register early, space limited!  All participants will receive a race t-shirt. Register for this event on the meeting registration pages.

COST: $15 per person

Meet at Convention Center West Doors at 7:30AM

FOUNTAIN WARS PRESENTATION JUDGING

SUNDAY, JUNE 17             9:15AM-11:00AM

Location: 101-J

Come listen to short presentations detailing the creative designs of your fellow preprofessionals. Fountain Wars is a three-part competition based on a written report, oral presentation, and a building-and-testing phase.  Official rules can be found at http://www.biosystems.okstate.edu/Gunlogson.

 

 

INTERNATIONAL PREPROFESSIONAL COUNCIL

BUSINESS MEETING

SUNDAY, JUNE 17             11:15AM-1:30PM

Location: 101-J

The nominations and election of the 2007-2008 International Preprofessional Council (IPC) will be held at this meeting.  Participants will also discuss and vote on issues that impact the student community of ASABE.  Roll call will be taken, the Student Mile Award will be given to the university with the most members traveling the longest distance, and check-in for the Poster Competition will take place.  Winners of the Student Mile Award will be announced at the AEM Awards Luncheon.  For meeting efficiency, the IPC requests that members plan to attend the entire meeting.

Have you ever wondered what engineers do in the "real world"?  Come listen as recently-graduated engineers speak about their experiences transferring from college student to working engineer, complete with advice and insight to make your transition as smooth as possible. The panel of young engineers will represent the different technical areas within the society, so bring your questions for this informative session.

POSTER COMPETITION

SUNDAY, JUNE 17             3:15PM-5:15PM

Location: EXHIBIT HALL B

Are you looking for an opportunity to share your research or design project and develop your technical communication skills? If so, get involved in the Preprofessional Poster Project Competition! This session encourages students to interact with industry, faculty, and fellow students by giving a technical poster presentation on an engineering project useful to agriculture and related areas. Check-in for the poster competition participants will be during the Preprofessional Business Meeting. Winners will be announced at the AEM Awards Luncheon. Cash awards of $500, $300, and $200 will be presented to first, second, and third place entries. “AUTISM, ANIMALS AND DESIGN”

TEMPLE GRANDIN, COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY

Location: Ballroom B

"I think in pictures," writes ASABE member Temple Grandin, and her so-called visual thinking is a tremendous advantage in her job as a livestock-equipment designer. Grandin's unique skill is a byproduct of her having autism, and she is living proof that those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders can lead highly productive lives with the proper support and understanding. Author of several books, including the revelatory Emergence: Labeled Autistic, and also Animals in Translation, Grandin has been the featured subject on National Public Radio and on such television programs as "48 Hours," "The Today Show" and "Primetime Live." Her insights on animal welfare and autism have enthralled and enlightened audiences, and you will be similarly affected when you hear her in Minneapolis

 

 

INDUSTRY-STUDENT EXCHANGE

Students will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with industry representatives from companies in each of the profession’s technical areas.  This relaxed environment promotes the building of professional contacts.  Come and receive information about career paths and specific employers in your respective area of interest.

All meeting registrants are invited to attend this welcome reception. Start off the evening with a welcome from ASABE's President Charles Sukup and get acquainted with the general ASABE population in addition to networking with other attendees. Come to an informational session hosted by the Young Professional Community to introduce new and old members alike to the many opportunities available in ASABE. Topics to be addressed include How to Get to Meetings and Conferences, Getting the Most out of Meetings, The Inner Workings of Technical Committees, and Parliamentary Procedure.  Refreshments will be provided.  All members, especially first-timers and preprofessionals are invited to attend.

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) is once again pleased to invite all the ASABE student members to attend the 70th Annual AEM Student Awards Luncheon. This event is a wonderful time to learn more about the professional side of the world as you dine. Luncheon reservations can be made with your student branch advisor. Luncheon reservations will be confirmed at the Preprofessional Business Meeting. Student Branch Advisors and AEM company members are also encouraged to attend. AEM company members are asked to contact AEM directly if they wish to attend the luncheon

 

 

GUNLOGSON ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN COMPETITION

K. K. BARNES STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

Location: 200-E

Invitations will be extended to the top three entries in the student paper competition. You can hear the authors of outstanding papers make their presentations. Come support the students from your school who may be participating. Winners will be recognized at the Awards Recognition Luncheon on Wednesday.

 

 

FOUNTAIN WARS CONSTRUCTION

MONDAY, JUNE 18            3:30PM-5:30PM

Construction  3:30PM-5:30PM          Judging    5:45PM-7:30PM

Fountain Wars is a competition aimed at students in their sophomore and junior years of study. It provides students with hands on experience in engineering design, and most importantly the students have a great time. Teams are given an hour and a half to build a fountain that completes two technical tasks and provides an aesthetic display.

 

 

TUESDAY, JUNE 19

ASABE CAREER FAIR

TUESDAY, JUNE 19          9:30AM-12:00PM

Location: Ballroom A

The Career Fair is just one of the many highlights which are a part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration.  It is an outstanding networking opportunity that allows interested individuals to connect with Fortune 500 companies, agricultural and bio-based businesses, bio-research companies, and major land grant universities looking for qualified candidates. 

 

The ASABE Career Fair provides an opportunity for employers and potential employees to come together informally and share information.  Academia will also be represented with opportunities at the masters and doctoral level.  Employers register their job positions at the membership desk and receive an interview table number.  These openings are posted with the table numbers by registration for review.  Prospective employees are invited to seek out employers of interest and exchange information.

THE NEXT 100 YEARS

SPECIAL SESSION

TUESDAY, JUNE 19          1:00PM-2:30PM

Location: MAIN Auditorium

This session will pick up where last year’s very popular session of the same title left off. Panelists will respond to the vision of the future laid out by those who spoke at the 2006 Annual International Meeting. Robotic tractors, rain on demand, peanut-flavored microbes, vaccines from cow’s milk – are these in our future? Where will the future take the profession, and what will be the role of the engineer in 2017? Expect an engaging provocative discussion on these topics.

WOMEN IN ASABE LUNCHEON

The Women in ASABE luncheon is an informal luncheon open to all ASABE members. As only nine percent of ASABE members are women; this luncheon provides a unique opportunity to meet, socialize, and network with women members from across ASABE.

Plan to attend the most important recognition event of the year. Newly elected Fellows and recipients of major awards will be honored at this luncheon. Also recognized will be preprofessionals and other individuals that have made outstanding contributions to the profession during the past year. The installation of ASABE's 2007 President, Donald Erbach, will immediately follow the awards presentation.
