HOW
TO NOMINATE AN
HISTORIC AGRICULTURAL OR BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING LANDMARK
The
maturity of a profession can be judged, at least partially,
by its knowledge of its own history. The ASABE historical
landmark activity was established to permit the Society
to commemorate significant past accomplishments with appropriate
landmarks. Through such activity, the professional pride
of Agricultural Engineers will be strengthened, their
knowledge of professional history enhanced, and their
incentive toward future achievements stimulated. In addition,
public appreciation of Agricultural Engineering will be
improved and the name of ASABE will be associated with
works and accomplishments of far-reaching benefits to
Society.
The
attached form may be used to initiate a nomination for
designation as an ASABE historic landmark of Agricultural
Engineering. Copies of the nomination should be submitted
through the ASABE Executive Vice President for consideration
by the ASABE Historic Commemoration Committee. Supplement
the information called for in the nomination form by supplying
additional photographs, printed materials, and other factual
material to support the nomination. Please keep the nomination
no longer than necessary to present the facts. Letters
of support are not particularly useful unless they present
factual information not otherwise available.
Responsibility
for arranging appropriate dedication ceremonies rests with the
sponsoring ASABE geographic unit. Plaques are enhanced by a
line drawing or photographic reproduction that represents the
event being commemorated.(See http://asabe.org/awards/historic2/centerpivot.html
or http://www.asabe.org/awards/historic2/skidsteer.html). However, be aware that
such graphics will increase the cost of the plaque. ASABE budgets
funds toward the purchase of plaques for two commemorations
per year, but responsibility for additional costs, organizing
and paying for local publicity, dedication ceremonies,
additional plaques, and coordination with others interested
in the site or ceremony rests with the sponsoring unit.
The responsibility to arrange for ongoing oversight, care,
and maintenance of the historic site is the responsibility
of the sponsoring unit. Usually the actual responsibility
for caring for the plaque is borne by the company, museum,
historical society, municipality, or university where
the plaque is displayed. The Committee suggests that geographic
units arrange for ceremonies in cooperation with local
chambers of commerce, historical societies, related companies
or organizations, or other involved and interested groups.
The
Committee suggests the following guidelines for events
that may qualify for ASABE historic commemoration:
1.
The historic, engineering event to be commemorated must
be associated with the advancement of Agricultural Engineering
in North America.
2.
While people should be recognized, the event is the main
thrust of the commemoration.
3.
To ensure objectivity in the selection process, the event
must have occurred at least 20 years prior to the nomination.
4.
The event must have caused a significant impact on the
industry as evidenced by the breadth of its acceptance,
its monetary savings, or in its increased environmental
or product safety for farmers or other consumers. The
benefits need not have persisted to the present.
5.
The event must be new and unique to North American agriculture;
for example, the adoption of the diesel engine as a power
source is not commemorable because other industries had
made similar adoptions earlier.
6.
Names of all people who contributed greatly to the event
will be included in the plaque wording even though they
may not have been Agricultural Engineers.
