Inside ASABE—September 2022

September 2022

In This Month's Issue:

From the Executive Director

ISO TC23/SC6 plenary meeting attendees
Earlier this month, ASABE hosted delegates from 16 countries who participated in ISO/TC 23/SC6 sprayer and crop protection standards meetings in Saint Joseph, Mich. The week-long gathering began with a field day at Michigan State University’s Southwest Research and Extension Center near ASABE Headquarters. Manufacturers brought their latest technologies including unmanned aerial and terrestrial sprayers. ASABE President Keith Tinsey gave opening remarks at the field day, which was an opportunity to connect those writing the standards with those developing public policy and legislation.  After a week of productive standards’ development meetings, the group enjoyed an open house and American-style barbecue at Headquarters (see picture).

I’m pleased to report that ASABE has been selected as an Affiliate Partner of the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA). ERVA’s purpose is to bring the engineering community together to envision high-impact solutions to society’s grand challenges and to spark new research directions for a more secure and sustainable world. This purpose connects perfectly with ASABE’s work, including the Circular Bioeconomy Systems efforts, and I’m confident becoming an Affiliate Partner will raise ASABE’s visibility.

Be on the lookout for Engage, our email, balloting, and collaboration platform, which will start to go online this week. Engage is replacing Forums. Sections and other membership groups will be the first to come online, followed soon by general committees and other non-standards/balloting groups. The balloting feature (Workspace) is under development, and once finalized the standards committees will join the new platform too.  Watch your email for more information … Engage will help you collaborate!

ASABE Hosts ISO Plenary Meeting

"The latest and greatest in agriculture spraying was on display Monday in Southwest Michigan."

That was the lead in the story that appeared in Headquarters' local newspaper earlier this month, when ASABE hosted a field day for viewing cutting-edge technology for agricultural spraying. The field day was the kickoff to a plenary meeting of ISO TC23/SC6, equipment for crop protection, hosted by ASABE at the Society's home in southwestern Michigan.

The local story has been reprinted for your enjoyment, with permission of the Herald-Palladium.

Resource "Capstone" Issue: Closing Out the College Experience

The September/October issue is a very special issue of Resource.

Published every three years, this Capstone issue showcases projects from 19 universities. Guest editor Andy Hale, from North Carolina State University, helped solicit these articles. Capstones represent the crowning achievement in obtaining a degree. The projects provide a culminating experience where students use their acquired knowledge to design solutions to real-world projects. Their designs are both innovative and exciting.

Sit back and enjoy what these students have accomplished.
