ASABE Presents 2019 Awards for Outstanding Achievement

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) recently presented awards for outstanding technical and professional achievements.  The following individuals were honored at the 2019 ASABE Annual International Meeting, held recently in Boston.

GUY FIPPS, PE, is the recipient of the 2019 Lalit and Aruna Verma Award for Excellence in Global Engagement.  Full biography

KENNETH HELLEVANG, PE, F.ASABE, is the recipient of the 2019 Sukup Global Food Security award for his exceptional engineering-based extension educational program that has enhanced drying, storage, and handling of grains, oilseeds, and other food products. Full Biography

RAMESH KANWAR, F.ASABE, is the recipient of the 2019 Kishida International Engineering award for his efforts improving education, research, and sustainable development impacting lives around the world. Full Biography

MICHAEL D. DUKES, PE, F.ASABE, is the 2019 recipient of the Heermann Sprinkler Irrigation award for his impactful and relevant research and extension in water conservation of irrigated systems.  Full Biography

JOE W. THOMAS is the recipient of the 2019 Mayfield Cotton Engineering award for his work that has advanced the cotton ginning industry through technical innovations and for educating ginners on use of those innovations. Full Biography

BERNIE ENGLE, PE, F.ASABE, is the 2019 recipient of the ADS/Hancor Soil & Water Engineering award for his contributions to development and application of hydrologic/water quality models and creation of widely used environmental decision support tools. Full Biography

BAOMING LI is the 2019 recipient of the Henry Giese Structures & Environment award for his critical leadership in modernizing the Chinese livestock industry. Full Biography

JAY HARMON, PE, F.ASABE, and SCOTT MUELLER, PE, were both recognized with Professional Engineer of the Year awards. Harmon was cited for his exemplary service to the engineering profession and performance in outreach, research, and teaching related to engineering animal production systems. Mueller was honored for his outstanding engineering technical leadership for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and for his service to ASABE in ethics, standards, and professional engineering exam development. RENFU LU, F.ASABE, MARIO VANDYKE, ANAND POTHULA, and ZHAO ZHANG were awarded the Rainbird Engineering Concept of the Year award for their Apple Harvest and Infield Sorting Technology. Collaborating with a Michigan-based company, the USDA-ARS researchers designed and assembled a new self-propelled apple harvest and infield sorting machine prototype. Read more

SREEKALA BAJWA, F.ASABE, is the recipient of the 2019 James R. and Karen Gilley Academic Leadership award for her exemplary leadership in cultivating excellence, collegiality, partnership, empowering faculty to succeed, and elevating her department’s reputation. Full Biography

JOSEPH C. HENGGELER is the recipient of the 2019 Award for the Advancement of Surface Irrigation for his extension work and his significant contributions using practical approaches to achieve adoption by surface irrigators. Full Biography

SHERRY L. HUNT, F.ASABE, is the 2019 recipient of the G.B. Gunlogson Countryside Engineering award for her global contributions to the analysis, design, and protection of stepped chute spillways and earthen embankments. Full Biography

YANBIN LI, F.ASABE, is the recipient of the 2019 ASABE International Food Engineering award for his outstanding contributions to the development of novel biosensing and biomodeling technologies for improving food safety. Full Biography

BRIAN BOMAN, PE, is the 2019 recipient of Netafim Award for Advancements in Microirrigation for outstanding contributions to the development and implementation of microirrigation technologies and best management practices regionally, nationally, and internationally. Full Biography

MICHAEL L. PATE is the 2019 recipient of theSMV Technologies Ergonomics, Safety, and Health award for his significant contributions to improving agricultural safety and health for vulnerable workers, vocational agriculture, youth, and professional groups. Full Biography

MICHAEL D. DUKES, PE, F.ASABE, is the 2019 recipient of the Evelyn E. Rosentreter Standards award for his work in the development of irrigation. Full Biography
